Do you remember Bonkers? They were a “fruity candy with an even fruitier inside”. Bonkers were little individually wrapped candies that came in grape, orange, strawberry, watermelon and chocolate. I never had Bonkers, but I do remember them.

The reason I remember them is every time I opened a comic in the 80’s there was a Bonker’s ad—every single issue–huge bonkers crushing a couple of farmers/country folk. I would put money on the fact that there’s probably even some issue out there that has 2 Bonkers ads!

I always wondered if they were any good. Were they?

I loved Bonkers. They were kinda like softer version of Starburst with translucent fruit gel on the inside. I liked them so much that my mom drove me to a mall to see the Bonkers mobile — a truck full of big stuffed fruit. I guess the idea was you could get “bonked” by them the way the people did in the commercial.

Strawberry was my favorite, but it never bonked me out…

Bonkers! I loved Bonkers! Man, I had totally forgotten…but now I can almost taste them. Strawberry, I think.

I never had a chance to have them either. 🙁

On a similar note, there was this great candy called “Zotz” which were these little candy shells filled up with effervescent foamy stuff that would explode in your mouth when your saliva breached it. A friend of mine always brought them to school and they were great. Then they got discontinued. A few years ago I found out that they started being made again and I ordered a whole bunch of them, but they aren’t nearly as good as I remember, and I suspect this is one of those cases where it’s not JUST the haze of nostalgia distorting my memories – I’m pretty sure the ones you can get now are pretty much nothing like the ones in the 80s.

I might have had Bonkers at one point back then, but the memory of it’s taste or what flavor I had is a mystery to me. Perhaps I didn’t after all, a product of parents who preferred Carefree sugarless gum over anything else back then. I do remember the comic ads and the TV commercials were ensuing numbers of people were being belted with giant Styrofoam fruit shapes, and they loved it!
