I really wanted to get across the feeling I had that morning. It was really strange to feel like there was some kind of tension rising. Everyone felt it, but no one was talking about it. It felt both dividing and uniting at the same time…
“The Right Bus” Storyboard
Here’s the storyboard for an epic long episode. I don’t know if your noticed, but I tried to reuse as many BG setups as I could. This way, I only needed to ink one BG at a time. It helped keep this episode manageable.
Here’s the final version:
“Goodbye Elm Tree” Storyboard
Here’s the storyboard for the latest episode. Tried to keep this one simple because of how long and complicated part two…
Here’s the final version:
“Sister” Storyboards
This one came in extra long with over 100 panels and I was having all kinds of problems keeping my sister on model. I’m not used to drawing designs like that, so it was a good challenge. 100 panels later, I was ready to go back and fix the first ones during the inking phase.
“Deer Bologna” Storyboards
Here’s a selection of storyboard panels from the latest episode. This was a short and sweet episode, a good way to balance out the schedule when there’s a couple longer/complicated episodes coming soon…
“Sweet Potatoes” Storyboards
I wanted tis sequence to feel dreamlike so I tied all of these ideas into one scene with graphic transitions. I really like doing this kind of thing. This is a really simple way of doing it, panning on and off to the next one, but there a millions ways to do the same thing. There are some people that I work with that these kind of transitions come so naturally to them, man I wish I could be more like them.
“Shooting Pencil” Storyboards
Here’s some of the actual storyboard panels from this week’s short “Shooting Pencil”.
This is one of the hardest steps in making these shorts, getting the compositions working with the correct perspective is always a challenge. I try to move fast and accurate, but sometimes you just have to keep redoing it until it works.
You can see how I draw the entire background through the characters, this way when I move into cleaning it up and separating off the backgrounds onto their own layer, I have all the information I need.
Here’s the final short:
“Alone” storyboards
Happy Halloween! Here’s some treats for you– some of storyboard drawings from “Alone”! Please don’t egg my house… 🙂
You can see that I draw really rough, it’s mostly to get the composition and perspective working. I also work hard to get some emotion in the expressions and poses.
Here’s a scene that I boarded, but actually cut when I got to the animatic.
