    I miss rotary phones.

Slipping a number while dialing was a common occurance. When I was young, I would try to get into the regular radio station contests by dialing all but the last number of the radio station, waiting for them to ask for “caller number five”. I never got through, but boy would my dad get mad when he got home from work, asking my mom why the phone was busy all day. She would snitch me out. Ouch.

Ha! That’s awesome! Maybe if you would have one a Hawaii vacation for the whole family, your Dad would have forgiven you! 🙂

  3. Mom says:

Ha! I remember that phone number!!!!

Not the first, but a good one!

I think the only number I ever called on a rotary phone was either my grandma’s or time & weather!

    1. Gabe Swarr says:

Ha! The time and weather! That’s right!

  5. Savage says:

My folks were using rotary phones until they got rid of their landline.

Rotary phones are probably the reason why the emergency number (911 or similar) is so short and “quick” to dial.

A couple years ago I bought and refurbished a really old rotary phone (from the 1930s!), because I had a landline and was feeling retro and I wanted to cover over an ugly wall-mounted phone jack in the kitchen. I still have the phone, although I don’t have a landline, so it’s just a display piece now.

That’s cool! My grandparents had an old phone that you cranked to get to work!

      1. fluffy says:

Mine isn’t a hand-cranked one, but it’s distinctive on its own right; after I got it working I was tickled pink by the very particular chimey sound of the ringer, and then a few days later I finally got around to watching Twin Peaks, and in the pilot a phone rang and sounded EXACTLY LIKE IT – and it was the very same model!

I wrote about it some more here: http://beesbuzz.biz/blog/e/2011/04/07-new_phone.php

        1. gabe says:

          Wow! That’s amazing!

      2. fluffy says:

Oh, durr, I was about 30 years off on my recollection of when it was made. Still, it’s a cool old phone.

        1. gabe says:

It is! I never saw one like that before!
