This is “Analog Agent Benjamin” coming at you this week with…. Cheerios

As much as I liked the TV ads for cereals like Trix, Luck Charms, and so on, the only cereal my Mom would get me was Cheerios.

You see, my Mom did not like the idea of me eating any cereals that had the words “Sugar”, “Chocolate”, or “Marshmallows” on the box. So when I asked for stuff like Fruit Loops, Trix, or Frosted Flakes, she would always get me Cheerios, Kix, or Wheaties instead. None of them were bad, but it would have been nice to at least try one of the other cereals for once. The only time I ever got to get anything other than Cheerios was when I was at a friend’s house and he had a box of Lucky Charms. I tried them out, and they just tasted awful.

So, what kind of cereals did you eat when you were a kid?

Ninja Turtles cereal was the best. It came with it’s own bowl! I still have that bowl, probably packed away in the basement of my parent’s house somewhere.

Cheerios were in our house a lot too. But to keep the fighting down between my younger brother & I, we could choose our own personal cereal from time to time. Lucky Charms or Count Chocula were usually my brother’s choice. I pick them also but most of the time I’d choose Raisin Bran.

It was always off brand cheerios and rice krispies at my house. When I moved out the first box of cereal I bought was Reese’s Peanut butter. I’ve never turned back. I buy sugar cereal for my kids, but it’s still the off brand.

I grew up with three adults, the youngest of whom was in her 50s. When big grocery runs happened, I usually got a single box of something fun (Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Cocoa Krispies, etc.), but the box would only last a few days.

Of my options left, Corn Flakes were the worst and Crispix were the best. In fact, I recently started eating Crispix again recently and found they’re really good even without the six or seven spoonfuls of sugar I employed in my youth.

My mom did the same thing, and I think I’m better for it. In college when I finally had the ability to buy whatever cereal I wanted I got all those “forbidden” ones and I found out that, jeeze, they’re gross. For breakfast. They make a fine dessert though.

I supposes I had the kind of parent who selectively would only get Cheerios, Corn Flakes, Lucky Charms, Rice Krispies and Life more often to feed us every morning before school. There might be time or two when I might get to have one I hardly ever had like Cocoa Puffs or the other ‘bad’ cereals that always get targeted.

I loved Lucky Charms actually. It was hard to convince my mom to get them for me. It was basically Cheerios with marshmallows. She allowed a sweet cereal once in a while, but like you pretty much Cheerios, Rice Krispies, Oatmeal and not much else.
