This is “Analog Agent Benjamin” coming at you this week with…. Nintendo Game Boy

The Nintendo Game Boy was one of the best handheld game systems I ever played as a kid.

I remember when I got this as a Christmas gift as a kid. I first I did not like the fact that it was only in black & white, but after I played with the game that came with it (Super Mario Land), I was hooked. I played it for many years until it just stopped working in 2006. Man, they just don’t make game system that last that long anymore.

So, did anyone else have a game boy when you were a kid? After getting it, did you feel bored again–EVER? What kind of Game Boy games do you remember playing?

  1. It’s still the best, in an age with a over abundance of buttons, short battery life and high price tags, the Gameboy was truly a king among handhelds.

I got it for Xmas too, though I had few games for it at all. My parents were pretty tight and I didn’t have a job much either to get any cash for new games so that was that.

I think mine was a Christmas present as well. I know for sure my second one was a birthday present. I sealed the fate of my first Game Boy (gray) when I got frustrated while playing Operation C in Stage 3, when I had lost 30+ lives trying to jump over a waterfall and failing and I punched the screen, cracking the LCD causing the black leakage. The Game Boy still worked, but the screen was done for. The replacement, which I got for my birthday late that same year was one of the red “Play It Loud” series. It was with that one that I played Pokemon Red obsessively, and actually got to where I could defeat the Elite Four using only my Mewtwo. I also had neighborhood friends whom I battled with. One of them, his dad played too. He was a Drill Sergeant, and had steep consequences for failure. I wasn’t brave or confident to battle him, though I knew my Pokemon were strong. The stipulations for that challenge was that the loser had to reset his game. I simply wasn’t willing to take such a risk.
