This week: Q-Bert

Why was the snake like a greaser? Where is Q-Burg? How come there are so many Q’s in this show?

A show that probably shouldn’t be thought too far head in. 🙂

This was actually part of a hour-long program that CBS aired called “Saturday Supercade”. The show lasted from 1983 to 1985 and contained cartoons based on the following, Q*bert, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Frogger, Space Ace, Kangaroo and Pitfall!

Gary Greenfield and I did the first development on Q*Bert. Taking our “cue” from the game itself, we came up with a 4-dimensional version of the Roar Runner and Coyote, a series of surreal gags based on the ever changing orientation of the characters.

We took it to the producer, who literally tossed it into the trash unread, then told us what he wanted to do.

And that’s how the showed ended up looking like a Happy Days knock-off.

Wow! Interesting! Man, your original idea sounded amazing!

Thanks for clearing that up. I always wondered the origins of this show.
