I didn’t go to Space Camp, but I did go to Shuttle Camp in Alamogordo, NM. It was… significantly less awesome than I’d been led to believe by the movie “Space Camp.” Mostly we learned about astronomy and basic physics and model rocketry, except I already knew all that stuff because I was the kind of kid who WANTED TO GO TO SPACE CAMP.

Eventually the boy would work for that TV network… very cool.

I hated double dare so bad. When it was on it meant I was missing cartoons.

Hah, I remember seeing the movie “Space Camp”. So many awful movies I went to in those days.

  5. I was lucky enough to be able to go to Space Camp.

It was fun! At the time, being an astronaut seemed like it was still a viable career path for a young person. I did not yet understand that I was far too asthmatic and math-ignorant to really make the grade, but who cares, SPACE CAMP.

I remember there being a mix-up with the registration due to the fact that my name was often confused for a girl’s. I was mildly disappointed that they didn’t put me in the girls’ bunks anyway…okay I was like 11, I wouldn’t have been able to stop giggling.

I was also disappointed that we didn’t get to put on the full EVA suits and practice maneuvers in the big water tank; that was for the older campers. But we did get put through various zero-g simulators and run a simulated Shuttle mission. We assembled and launched our own model rockets, but they wouldn’t let us put crickets in the cargo container. They also bussed us around to various NASA contributor corporations around Alabama, the places that made various components of the Shuttle, and put us on tours. That bit was boring to me–though now it would fascinate me–and I always wanted to get back to doing more cool stuff back at the actual camp.

Wow! That sounds like so much fun! Did you feel like you were ready to fly into space after all of that?

Thanks for the story! Now I can finally live vicariously through you.
