Slap bracelets were colorful bracelets that you “slap” or “snap” onto your wrist. They had a piece of metal in them that was straight as as soon as they would bend, they would roll up around your wrist. They came in all colors and designs, the leopard prints or striped designs were the “coolest” ones.

They were fun because we weren’t allowed to have toys in school, but these didn’t count. You would hear a bunch of snapping every time the teacher would turn around to write on the board.

The only problem was when the cloth would start to wear off and expose the sharp metal edges underneath. That’s when the fun and harmless bracelet would turn into a deadly weapon capable of slicing your own wrist.

I remember mine got all rusty from perspiration too! So over time it became an oxidized bendable knife, with its neon green cloth still glued on, but terribly frayed. I always made sure the edges were on the TOP of my wrist so I wouldn’t slash my veins wide open.

My brother and I had hours of fun with slap bracelets! Mostly trying to hurt each other by slapping them on as hard as we could 🙂 drove our mom crazy 😀 they are trying to make a comeback too… I got really excited the other day when I saw a watch that was actually a slap bracelet!!! My niece couldn’t understand why I was so excited lol

I tried to get them to come back at Manheim with my church youth group. But because of the zero tolerance against fun, I think they got banned.
