It seemed like beach and surfer style fashion was all the rage in the 80’s and that gave birth to glasses string. I really couldn’t understand how something that a librarian would wear could make you cool, but it did.
They were strings that had a plastic loop on each end and you would attach them to the stem of your glasses and let it droop down to your shoulders and around your neck. They would come in all kinds of colors and makes–especially neon. I guess it’s for all those times that you want to take your glasses off but are just too lazy to carry them?
I’m not sure, but I think either the Ice Man or Maverick wore them in Top Gun. I guess that would be the ultimate thing to do: wearing sunglasses with no helmet, go into a loop, they would fall off and dangle around your neck, then just barrel roll to get them back on your nose. That maneuver definitely would call for a thumbs up out your cockpit to your squadron leader…
