Coca-cola released New Coke in 1985 with so much fanfare you would think that Jesus himself thought of the thing. The original Coke insultingly became “coke classic” and the world of soft drinks was changed forever–or was it?
New Coke was so similar to the original Coke that it was worthless. It did taste a little sweeter, but it just wasn’t the revolutionary new favor that Coke claimed. It became a joke and in a few months nobody even cared anymore about it.
I remember trying it and never wanting to drink it again. I guess that goes to show you that just because something is new, it doesn’t make it any better. 
New Coke tasted bad on purpose. This was a very clever strategy by Coke to switch over from sugar to the cheaper corn syrup. They pulled old coke entirely for a couple months while people suffered with the new recipe. Then released Coke Classic…no one ever noticed the flavor difference. After all why would they? It still tasted better than New Coke. As for Clear Pepsi, it was just awesome.

@ Matthew You know, I don’t know. It just came to mind when I was writing this.
I think I had more fonder memories of drinking Pepsi that used to get sold in large, thin glass bottles at grandma’s house. Only because she didn’t have piped-in city water so drinking off the tap was off-limits for me (could never get through the taste from her well). Too bad they don’t bottle ’em that way anymore.
Smaller bottlers still make real soda! In glass bottles, with cane sugar. It tastes pretty much exactly like my sunlit memories of getting a bottle of Coke from the machine in the Contemporary Arts Center during an art class when I was six.
