Remember cassette tapes? Back before the days of CDs and mp3s? Remember the freedom you had of being able to easily record copies of your music or songs off the radio? You could be creative and make mixtapes. They sounded pretty good, well, the “metal” ones did. They were small, compact, and sometimes squeaky. You had to actually wait while fast forwarding and flipping the tape over to get to the song you wanted, but cool to have “song loops” across the sides.

Tapes were great, but also had some major drawbacks besides the fact that the more you listen to them the quality got worse, they would also get tangled or rip. That’s when you broke out the pencil or the scotch tape…

my buddy stayed over one night and we recorded all the music from mega man 2 onto a blank tape while I played it… we were going to record commentary but we got bored of that pretty quick.

I still have that tape somewhere…

you know what I liked about tapes? They didn’t fuckin skip like cds do

That’s so cool! I used to record Transformers off of TV because we didn’t have a VCR.

I still use tapes! They are the best thing to have in a vehicle, you can blindly reach into the glove box or wherever you store em, grab one and stick it in. They can get stepped on, beer spilled on them and collect dust and they’re still pretty reliable. If you don’t like the tape that’s in….pull it out and throw it in the back!
I dunno, I still love tapes. They will always sound rad to me.

Hot tip: a Bic clear plastic or yellow pen, circa 1985, fits almost perfectly into the reels. And mush, ma man, I used to record 16 bit musics from games I’d rent and play ’em while walkin’ my beat as a Security guard at a paper mill. Night shift. Shit kept me sane. Still have the cassettes.

I did that stuff too, shame I never kept those tapes. One of the many joys children of today will never fulfill.
